‘We face a global emergency’ over oceans: UN chief sounds the alarm at G7 Summit event
On June 8, 2018, on the Eco-Business online magazine published an article on the speech by the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during the recent G7 Summit of industrialized nations, in Charlevoix, Canada. In this talk the Secretary expressed concern for the amount of plastic in the oceans and for ocean acidification which is disrupting the marine food chain while record-level ocean temperatures are killing coral reefs and creating fiercer, more frequent storms. Guterres urged the participants to the G7 to effectively use their leadership on combatting land-based pollution, on creating marine protected areas, on reviving fisheries, on building the resilience of coastal ecosystems and communities, in particular in relation to climate change.
